Due to water scarcity being experienced in Tohu, Sabon Gari Local
Government Area of Kaduna State, farmers in the area have appealed to
the government to come to their aid to avoid loss of N5 million worth of
farm produce.

In a chat with AgroNigeria’s Rowland-George Omeni, one of the farmers,
Saibu Sambo, said the water scarcity was born out of the increase in the
number of dry season farmers who depended on a pond to supply water in
varying quantities to meet the needs of their farm.

According to Sambo, “In Tohu town of Sabon Gari Local Government, Kaduna
State, irrigation farmers uses stagnant pond water that yearly
accumulates in a hollow rock when rain falls. In previous time, the
number of the dry season farmers was less than now and the pond
sufficiently provides the farmers with the required water quantity.”

“This year however, the number of farmers increased beyond the capacity
of the water in the pond. During my inspection on 27th of December,2018,
I saw the dried water pond surrounded by more than thirty small scale
farms separated in an about five hectares of land where different  cash
crops like tomatoes, green beans, chili pepper and many others have
perfectly grew and reached matured stage.”

Sambo lamented that though the matter had been reported to the local
council, requesting for a solution to the water problem in the
community, no serious action had been taken.

He stressed that, “If enough water is not provided in two weeks’ time,
the plants will dry and perish and surely about N5 million expected farm produce will be lost. To protect the farmers from losing their economic source, a standard borehole needs to be urgently constructed as a permanent solution or adequate water be deported to the area in water
tanks as temporary solution.”

It was gathered that Sabon Gari Local Government had donated four irrigation pumps to the farmers and cooperatives four months ago. This
donation encouraged farmers to expand their farms and new farmers to
join the farming community.
