FG spends N2.7trn on agriculture, infrastructure – Lai Mohammed

Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has stated that N2.7 trillion has been disbursed by the Federal Government on Agriculture and provision of other infrastructure in the 2017 budget.

AlhajiMohammed revealed this on Monday at a Town Hall Meeting in Dutse, Jigawa State.

He highlighted that this was to boost agriculture in the State and Nigeria as a whole. He also noted that the government has been rehabilitating and constructing rail lines to connect all parts of the country.

According to the minister, it is important to secure the transportation of perishable agricultural products to avoid wastage. He said most of the perishable items get spoilt en route due to logistics fault or other reasons, hence the need for alternative transportation.

Also speaking at the event, the special assistant to the Central Bank Governor, MrOlatundeAkande, disclosed that the apex bank had contributed to increase agricultural production with N107 billion from 2015 through the Federal Government Anchor Borrowers Scheme.

He elaborated that the loan by CBN to farmers was on a single digit interest. He also said that the bank intervened on 15 different farm produce, which includes sesame, rice, soya bean, cowpea, groundnuts, cassava, and poultry among others.

Also at the Town Hall Meeting were Minister of Agriculture, Chief AuduOgbeh, Minister of Water Resources, Alhaji Suleiman Adamu, and Minister of State for Trade, Industry and Investment, Hajiya Aisha Abubakar.
