National Orientation Agency crucial to Nigeria’s nutrition -DG


Director General, National Orientation Agency, Dr. Garba Abari says the NOA plays an important role in promoting food and nutrition in Nigeria.

Dr. Garba who said this at the 4th edition of Nutritious Food Fair organized by Harvest Plus in Victoria Island, Lagos explained that the prosperity of a country is not in its physical wealth but in the healthiness of its people.

According to him, “I have therefore taken to be personally here and to solidly identify with Harvest Plus and its ideals, which are in tandem with what the National Orientation Agency stands for”

“It is misleading to ever imagine that the greatness and prosperity of nations is measured in terms of the number of its skyscrapers, airports, multi-billion naira edifices and abundant mineral resources; and not in terms of how cultured, cultivated, enlightened, well nurtured, fed and healthy her citizenry is”. He added

Abari said that it was impossible for an underfed and malnourished nation to guarantee the growth and prosperity of its people which makes the NOA saddled with the responsibility of public sensitization of the importance and benefits of nutritious foods.

On his part, Director General, National Directorate of Employment, Dr. Nasiru Argungu disclosed that NDE aims not only at creating employment within but exporting employment. He also confirmed that the Agency has over hundred skill acquisition centres and 54 Agric training centres in the country.

While enlightening the audience on ‘micro-nutrient deficiency which he tagged ‘hidden hunger’, Head of Nutrition, Federal Ministry of Health, Dr. Chris Isokpunwu emphasised the need for micro-nutrients in the body, adding that their absence of could result in serious health challenges.

According to him, “micro-nutrients are those nutrients that we need in very small quantities in the body but when they are not there, they result in problems.”
