In response to the damage caused by Stem borer and Rice blast to crops in Nigeria, Gombe State Agricultural Development Programme, (GSADP), has advised that burning of straws after harvest is the most preferable way to avoid pest disease.
While disclosing this to farmers, GSADP Programme Manager, Mr. Maina Binus explained that gathering all straws after harvest would help and prepare them for the next farming season.
”I am calling on the farmers to gather all the straws after harvest in one place and burn them.”
“When you do not deal with the straws completely, the next farming season, the pest will return in a more devastating manner.” He said.
He noted that farmers who came to them on time during the 2018 farming season after detecting the problem on their farms got immediate help.
Binus, therefore, advised farmers to always seek the help of GSADP any time they require assistance, noting that the agency had a competent team to meet their needs.
