In bid to eradicate army worm and its deadly effect on farmlands in Jigawa state, the Government of the State has provided free 500 cartons of cypermethrin pesticide to farmers in Hadejia area of the state.
Chairman, Hadejia Chapter, All farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Alhaji Usman Mohammed, who disclosed this in Jigawa, said that the worm had recently invaded some farms in the State, destroying valuable crops like beans, Benny seeds, rice, and maize among others.
Mohammed further disclosed that AFAN ensured that the pesticide was distributed to farmers in remote areas of the State to control the spread of the disease.
‘‘Within five days of the epidemic the state government intervened by providing pesticides, which were distributed to farmers in all the eight local governments of northern zone”. He said.
‘‘We ensured that the chemical was spread in the affected farmlands, and I am happy to inform you that within a week, the disease was eliminated”. He added.
Mohammed also commended the State government for providing improved rice seedlings and fertilizers to farmers at subsidized rates.
