As part of efforts to grow the agricultural sector and boost value chain additions, the Federal Government has made known its plans to resuscitate and employ the services of 12 River Basin Development Authorities in the country.

Chairman, Governing Board of Cross River Basins Authority, Eseme Eyiboh stated this in an interview with with journalists in Uyo.

Eyibo stated the goal was to revive the agricultural sector through proper management of surface and underground water resources; adding that the exercise had already begun in rice farms in the states and would soon move to other spheres.

“The Federal Government is determined to grow the sector and has come up with innovative policies not only to ensure food sufficiency but to boast value chain addition.”

While lamenting the activities of the middlemen, the chairman advised farmers and agriculturalists to key into government initiatives such as this, stating that the lackluster attitude towards such initiatives was the result for the backward slope in the sector.

“Before now, there was a decline in value chain where farmers were no longer having the benefit of their labour,” he said

He added that , the dearth of ideas and innovations had been largely responsible for the inability of Nigeria River Basins Development Authorities to deliver on their mandates which led to food insufficiency in the past.
