National Publicity Secretary of the National Cashew Association of Nigeria (NCAN), Mr Sotonye Anga on Sunday, June 3, said crops with shorter gestation period are youth friendly with the prospect of augmenting the economy.

Anga made this known in Lagos while addressing newsmen.

He also mentioned that crops like pawpaw, vegetables, banana, plantain, cashew and others were good examples of quick yields and guarantees profit within the shortest possible time.

In his remarks: “There is need for the Nigerian youth to understand that they do not need billions of naira to start a viable crop plantation.

“Currently, my team and I are trying to help young people by providing them with basic resources so that they can become proud farmers.

“Youths are not so patient, as such, they want to start making profit as soon as they begin and that is why we have selected hybrid plantain, banana, pawpaw and cashew.”

The secretary explained that the gestation periods for the crops in focus were between six months and one year – after which farmers can maximize profit from the sales of the produce.

He stressed that the youths must be actively involved in the on-going agricultural reforms, “We do not want the youths to see farming as a fairy tale; we want them to know that it is achievable and doable.”
