Farmers in Gwagwalada Area Council, FCT have received over 70 metric tonnes of fertiliser in addition to other agricultural inputs.

Chairman of the council, Mr Adamu Danze, made this known during the official commencement of fertiliser distribution at the area council in Gwagwalada, FCT on Wednesday.

Danze said the gesture was geared towards ensuring productivity and bountiful harvest in crop production.

He added that the donation is not limited to fertilisers alone, but will soon include grains, such as; maize and rice, which will be dispersed to farmers at a reduced cost.

In his words: “In an effort to boost food production and food security in Gwagwalada, the area council has commenced the distribution of 70 metric tonnes of fertilser to farmers in 10 wards.

“We want to re-organise farmers and support their effort because agriculture is key to our economy.

“We must subsidise these items to encourage them, it is our target to ensure that more people embrace farming by going back to agriculture for sustainable development of Nigeria.

“We will ensure that every farmer benefits from the distribution of these products because we have brought the price down to the lowest level that anyone can get in the market.

“This year, there are 70 metric tonnes of fertilisers, we have 100 sprayers; we have 200kg improved seeds of rice and 400 kg of maize, for distribution to farmers.”

Danze noted that a committee will be created to oversee the distribution, with the expectation that reports concerning the exercise will be received at the end of each sale.

The committee will include district heads, community leaders and ward councilors.

Similarly, the Head of Agriculture Department in the council secretariat, Mr Yohana Ishaya, said the gesture was a worthy one, adding that the move will help accentuate the president’s agricultural reformation programmes.
