Community Leader empowers 100 in Ekiti

With spirited yearning to make his district the focal point and home to cocoa farming, an affluent  cocoa farmer and The Oniyare of Ijan-Ekiti, Chief Sesan Fabamise, has distributed 10, 000 cocoa seedlings to 100 farmers in Gboyin, Ijan-Ekiti, Ekiti state.

Fabamise distributed the seeds to the beneficiaries on Sunday, May 20th, 2018.

The affluent farmer said the exercise would be repeated in the coming years, while pleading with those who did not benefit from this year’s scheme to be patient and hopeful.

Fabamise noted that this was the first of many projects, saying that there was more to come in successive years.

He said, “I wish to inform you that the variety of cocoa seedlings being distributed is the CRIN TC-8 that matured in 24 months and if properly cared for, it is capable of producing 1.5 tonnes/ha.”

He emphasized that the major goal of the project was to produce first-rate cocoa pods, which will in turn, make the state the hub of cocoa production in the country.

Also speaking at the event was Head, Project Monitoring, Reporting and Remediation Office (PMRO), Ekiti Office, Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (NIRSAL), Mr. Ayo Ashade, acknowledged the community leader’s kind gesture.

Ashade noted that the objective of the empowerment was to encourage and employ the farmers to create income for themselves, generate revenue, and also spawn additional employment opportunities.

He said, “There is the need to apply the knowledge and experience they have garnered over the years and also do it in line with the current agricultural practices for the harvest to meet the cocoa market international standard.

“I also wish to appeal to the stakeholders to do more in order to eradicate poverty in our society.”
